With a background in the construction industry, first as a journeyman sheet metal mechanic; later as a heating and air conditioning technologist and having owned a few businesses, I understand how an injury or sickness can have a devastating impact on a family.When I was in the trade, I got a piece of welding slag in my eye, went to the hospital, had it removed and patched up. I had the typical disability insurance at work but had to wait 90 days before I could make a claim. I could not wait 3 months for a pay-cheque. We had 5 children to feed, so I was back at work the next day, climbing scaffolds and ladders with a patch on one eye. Not the safest or smartest plan.
